Sunset over a Sea of Clouds, Mount Tamalpais

from $30.00

During summer in the Bay Area, the coastal fog rolls in frequently, covering the area with a blanket of clouds. However, the top of Mount Tamalpais is usually tall enough to afford a clear view of the low-hanging fog below. I captured this scene in August of 2021. As the sun set, it dipped beneath some lingering wildfire smoke and the sky glowed orange. I ran down a hillside looking for a clear shot of the scene and stopped on an exposed hillside overlooking the ocean. I lined up my telephoto lens and mounted a 3-stop graduated ND filter to neutralize the difference in exposure between the sky and the foreground, and managed to expose several frames before the sun disappeared below the horizon.
