Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS above Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park
I knew that Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS might be visible above the western horizon in mid-October 2024, and I thought of locations in northern California which might provide the clearest vantage point. I decided on a whim to do a day trip to Yosemite National Park, about four hours away, in the hopes of seeing the comet after sunset. I arrived at Taft Point just as sunset began, and stayed until every other person at the viewpoint had left. At that point I began to see a faint smudge above the horizon, which grew brighter as the night sky became darker. I snapped this long-exposure as the comet became fully visible to the naked eye. On the face of El Capitan to the right, you can even see lights from climbers spending their night on the rock wall.
